From Rome to Milan via Ravenna, the western capital moved, looking for the site least vulnerable to barbarian incursions. And wherever capital moved, money followed. And where there is money, there is monumental art, science and literary culture. In Ravenna there were great figures like Galla Placidia and Peter Chrysologus. Today, Ravenna’s early Christian art and architecture are among the world’s greatest treasures. It is one of the few places in the world where you can walk into a church and have almost the same experience that one of the Fathers of the Church would have had.
