The Jewish calendar plays an important role when it comes to the seven Jewish holidays and the new moons. God’s calendar is based on the phases of the moon. Each month of a lunar calendar begins with a new moon. Passover falls on the first full moon of spring. The first three festivals take place in March and April. Pentecost, the fourth, marks the summer harvest at the end of May or beginning of June. The last three festivals take place in September and October.
These moments of celebration are important because each symbolizes an aspect of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The seven festivals are:
The Feast of Passover (Pessah)
The Festival year begins with Passover, the fourteenth day of the first month. It is the festival of salvation which is celebrated for seven days.
The Feast of Unleavened Bread (Hag HaMotzi)
On the fifteenth day of the same month (the night after Passover), only unleavened bread may be eaten for the next seven days.
The Feast of Firstfruits (Reshit Katzir)
This takes place at the beginning of the harvest and signifies Israel’s gratitude and dependence on God.
The Feast of Pentecost (Shavu’ot)
This occurs 50 days after the Feast of Firstfruits and represents gratitude to God for the harvest. Pentecost means fifty in Greek.
The Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teru’ah)
This festival takes place on the first day of September, the seventh month. In the Bible, Moses blew the trumpet in one way to call different groups to come together and in another way to signify that it was time to pack up and move camp and in another way to signify as they began their journey to a new camp. The sound of horns on Rosh Hashanah is a signal of preparation for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur)
This feast takes place on the tenth day of the seventh month after the Feast of Trumpets. It is the only feast which is not celebrated by the Church. The Day of Atonement will be fulfilled at the second coming of Jesus.
The Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot)
It is the seventh and final feast and occurs five days after the Day of Atonement, on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. The Lord will establish his tabernacle in Jerusalem, and the world will come year after year to appear before the king and worship him.
“Just as the four spring festivals were fulfilled chronologically during the time of Jesus, I believe the last three festivals will also be fulfilled chronologically when Jesus returns to Earth,” Amir said. “He will return at the Feast of Trumpets to the people of Israel. They will repent when they see him, and this is Yom Kippur. And they will enter, having accepted him, into the Millennial Kingdom, which is the Feast of Tabernacles.
So I believe in the importance of understanding the calendar to understand the feasts it has prescribed. And God was actually very angry with the way Israel had transformed these festivals, the New Moons and the Sabbath. If you want to understand God’s level of frustration with the way they are twisting these holidays, check out the first chapter of Isaiah. But God prescribed these festivals because they were a model of His plan of salvation for Israel and for the whole world. And so besides, I would say that yes, it is important to pay attention to festivals.
Many Christians view the Feast of Trumpets as a potential time for the rapture of the Church. I will say that the Jewish people’s calendar has to do with the Jewish people and how God treats the Jewish people. So I wouldn’t necessarily connect the rapture of the church to any of the Jewish holidays because the rapture is a day that no one knows the day or time of. But when it comes to the second coming, when Jesus returns to earth with us, not for us, that’s when the last three feasts will be fulfilled.
Colossians 2:16 says that the Sabbath, the new moon, and the festivals are all shadows of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
Barry clarifies some misconceptions people have when trying to make precise calculations based on the Jewish calendar.
“A lot of people will try to create an equation based on the 30-day cycles of the Jewish lunar calendar,” Barry said. “The interesting thing that happens a lot is that people look at what Peter says in 2 Peter 3:8: that one day to the Lord is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day, and they try to create sort of an equation by calculating the fact that in the seven thousandth year, when we enter this period of time or exceed the initial 6000 years of the lunar calendar, then all of a sudden, here we are in the Millennial Kingdom. But Peter is simply observing that God dwells outside of time. He doesn’t give us a calculation to determine when all this is going to happen.
The millennium goal
Barry explains what he believes to be the purpose of the Millennium.
“What is important for us to recognize is that the Bible does not tell us the purpose of the Millennium. So there is a certain element of speculation that we can do based on the fact that God, throughout history, has been trying to reach humanity,” Barry said. “What follows the Millennium is the Great White Throne Judgment. And the reason I think that’s important is because, for the first time in the history of the world, this place is going to be run, right .The King of kings and Lord of lords will reign from Jerusalem with a rod of iron. There will be justice. There will be a fair judgment and issues will be resolved quickly and decisively. One thing I think everyone will appreciate over the millennium is that there will be no politics, there will only be government.
“Then we will see at the very end, when the true King has reigned for a thousand years, the moment Satan is released to deceive, a massive number of people in the world will follow him instead of Jesus. So if we want to get to a “why” about the Millennium, that essentially comes full circle. By that time, God will have done everything to reach humanity, including not only sending His son to die for the sins of the whole world, but also sending him back to rule the whole world, judge it fairly and rule it as he should. have been executed all the time. So in a sense, not that God needs to justify his behavior, but it gives the judgment of the Great White Throne makes a lot more sense,” Barry said.
