The March for Life, the major annual gathering of pro-life activists in the nation’s capital, revealed that the theme for its 49th march next year is “equality begins in the womb.”
Jeanne Mancini, chair of the March for Life Education and Advocacy Fund, unveiled the theme Wednesday at an event at the Heritage Foundation headquarters in Washington, D.C., and streamed live on Facebook.
During his remarks, Mancini explained that the theme was a response to recent national dialogues about the nature of equality in the United States, saying the word is “often invoked” but “rarely defined.”
“Although almost everyone seems to agree on the importance of the topic of equality, there is little agreement on the definition of equality, who it applies to, and whether how it should be applied to important policy issues,” Mancini said.
“We want to expand this debate, this rigorous debate, about equality to include the unborn who are often overlooked because they cannot speak for themselves.”
Mancini said she believes “there is real value in our culture recognizing the dignity inherent in every human life” and that aspects such as race, disability status and economic background “have not been of importance”.
“What matters is the fact that each of us is a human being,” she continued. “What matters is that life is precious and because it has this inherent human dignity it must be protected from the moment of conception.”
In addition to Mancini, pro-life activists including Carrie Campbell Severino of the Judicial Network, Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation and Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie of the Catholic Association spoke at the inauguration.
Heritage Foundation President Kay Cole James, who is expected to step down as head of the prominent conservative organization in a few weeks, delivered the keynote address and explained how she prioritizes the pro-cause. life.
“The question of life is so close to my heart,” James said. “Deep down, I fight for the right to life of unborn children in our country, of the elderly, of those born with a disability. »
It was also announced that at the pre-March rally, award-winning contemporary Christian music star Matthew West would perform for those gathering on the National Mall.
“I want to encourage you to join me and thousands of other pro-lifers who believe that every life matters and every story deserves a chance to be told,” West said in a video released during the event. “It’s important for us to come together and be a voice for those who don’t have one. »
In January, for the first time in its history, the March for Life was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 March for Life took place before the first lockdowns.
Speakers included various state legislators and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, who Talk about her mother’s decision not to have an abortion despite significant pregnancy complications.
“I’m so grateful that my mother gave me a chance in life, because many times she could have made a choice to do something different,” Tebow told his virtual audience at the time. “But because of his pro-life story, I can share my story.”
The 2022 March for Life, scheduled for January 21, 2022, comes as the U.S. Supreme Court considers several cases that could overturn the 1973 decision. Roe v. Wade.
Last week, for example, the Supreme Court agreed to hear oral arguments Nov. 1 regarding the constitutionality of a Texas law that bans most abortions once a baby’s heartbeat is detected, or about six weeks into the pregnancy.
Texas Heartbeat Abortion Ban Contradicts Legal Precedent Deerwhich prohibits states from banning abortions before fetal viability.
