Mark Goodacre, professor of New Testament and Christian origins in Duke’s Department of Religious Studies, will speak on “Transforming the Gospels: Exploring John’s Relationship to the Other Three.”
The lectures, sponsored by the ACU Center for the Study of Ancient Religious Texts, are
Free and open to the public. Jeff Childers, director of the center, said in a news release that Goodacre would speak on the complex and controversial issue of the relationship between the Gospel of John and the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke.
Goodacre will speak at 4 p.m. on “John’s Dramatic Transformation of the Synoptics” and at 7 p.m. on “John’s Christological Transformation of the Synoptics.”
“It will explore John’s knowledge of the Synoptics, revealed by the way the evangelist presents his stories in a dramatic mode,” Childers said in the release.
“In addition, it will address surprising and generally understated similarities in the Christology of the Synoptics and John.”
